The need for audiences to make sense of fake news, political propaganda, alternative facts and the flood of tweets and images is stronger than ever. For the past week my students and I have been trying to make sense of the Trump-filled airwaves and 140 character rants. I don’t want them to feel they are voiceless but understand that we HAVE agency beyond our clicking and swiping skills.
My workshop for teachers on the 17th of Feb aims to share communication theorists’ tools to help students in high school become active and thoughtful consumers of media; to learn to analyze media messages and understand misrepresentation in the media.
